「Face-Regular Polyhedra」

Face-Regular Polyhedra
Regular Polyhedra (Platonic Solids) refer to just five specific polyhedra: the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron. These shapes satisfy extremely strict conditions: all their faces are congruent regular polygons, and the arrangement of faces at every vertex is identical (meaning that no matter which vertex you choose, the number of faces meeting at that vertex, their shapes, and the angles they form are all the same).
In contrast, Face-Regular Polyhedra have only one essential requirement: "all faces must be regular polygons." This definition includes Platonic Solids, but also encompasses Archimedean solids, Johnson solids, Prisms, and Antiprisms, among others. While their faces are regular polygons, these polyhedra may be composed of multiple types of regular polygons or have non-uniform vertex configurations.
The Periodic Table of Polyhedra
To understand the properties of polyhedra in a unified manner, a new framework is proposed that combines the "polyhedral graph structure" of a polyhedron's skeleton, which possesses "Face-Regularity," with "geometric symmetry," which is "face transitivity" that the polyhedron has in space. Furthermore, under the conditions of "limiting the maximum face size (e.g., all faces are pentagonal or smaller)" and "constant vertex degree (i.e., the same number of edges meet at every vertex)," they have derived the result that the number of "Face-Regular Polyhedra" is finite. This suggests that the potentially infinite world of polyhedra can be systematically classified and listed under specific constraints, much like an attempt to create a "Periodic Table of Polyhedra." As a specific investigation, a structural list for polyhedra with "two types of face sizes (e.g., only triangles and squares, or only pentagons and hexagons)" is systematically presented. This holds the potential to be a powerful tool for unraveling the geometric beauty and functionality in various fields, such as the design of new architectural structures and the construction of molecular models with specific symmetries.
